April 21, 2009 - The Los Angeles branch of the Paley Center for Media is currently conducting their
annual William S. Paley Television Festival, AKA Paley Fest. This two-week event spotlights a group
of noteworthy television series and television luminaries, with each night devoted to a different
show or person. Be sure to check out the rest of IGN TV's coverage of Paley Fest 2009.
Spoiler Warning: If you haven't seen the final episodes of Battlestar Galactica, be warned they will
be discussed below. [Click Here to read what the producers, plus the cast, had to say about the
Galactica spinoff/prequel series Caprica at Paley Fest.]
The audience at the Paley Fest night devoted to Battlestar Galactica and Caprica Monday night were
treated to an exciting new trailer for the upcoming TV-movie, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan. The
Plan follows events from early in the series from the Cylon perspective – showing more of what was
going on with the Cylons during the attack on the human colonies and in its aftermath. The fast
paced trailer showed a barrage of images from the movie, which includes all of the actors who
played Cylons on Galactica, except for Lucy Lawless. Moments of note included Sam Anders
awakening in a Cylon resurrection chamber, and seeing one of the Doral models getting ready for a
suicide bombing mission (as seen on the "Litmus" episode of Galactica). Several Number Six models
are glimpsed, including a new dark haired version Tricia Helfer said was referred to as "Tough Six" in
the script.
We also see Boomer speaking to Cavil about her botched mission to kill Adama, exclaiming, "I shot
him twice in the chest!" to which Cavil yells, "How about once in the head?!" Cavil looks to be a
major character in The Plan, as we see just how bloodthirsty he is, stating at one point, "Let's get
this genocide started." Near the end of the trailer, he proclaims, "We had our foot on the throat of
humanity and we failed to step down on it."
During the Q&A that followed, Galactica executive producers David Eick and Ron Moore joked about
the opening credits to the show and the statement "And they have a plan" in regards to the
Cylons. Eick recalled calling Moore and telling him about that line, and Moore responding, "Are you
sure we want to do that?" Moore said he recalls simply replying, "There is no f**king plan!", noting
they had not at all decided the intricacies of the Cylons history and intentions at that point. Given
the history of those words in relation to the show, they both thought it was very funny that this
TV-movie coda to the Galactica story would carry that title.
Moderator Seth Green (yes, him) asked Moore many questions about the series finale of Galactica
and the idea of history repeating itself. Moore said he was a big history fan and fascinated by the
rise and fall of civilizations. With the series ending, he felt it was important to "bend the show back
to its relevance to today," adding that the fact that the story was "Connected to where we were
was very important to us."
Moore noted some things that changed as they approached the finale, explaining that he originally
intended to have Laura Roslin die before the Galactica reached Earth and even told Mary McDonnell
that was going to happen. However, while thinking over the finale, he decided to change it so she
does arrive on Earth, only to die shortly after.

Supernatural Is Not In Danger of Cancellation
I’ll have to check with our resident Supernatural expert Marla, but I believe it’s already been confirmed that it’s coming back next year. I’ve been late to join the Supernatural bandwagon, but now I’m dancing to that tune. It’s back on this week after another 2 or 3 week break, with 4 eps to go. This is another one of those shows I think would benefit by having a definitive end game and not overstay. I’m not saying 5 seasons should be enough, but they’ve been hinting for 4 seasons now that they know where they are going with all of this – an unavoidable Sam and Dean battle at the end.
It’s the time of the year where the networks and fans gather together in an annual dance of Save our Show-itist. Everyone is stressed and upset at the unsettled nature of everything – is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles gone? What’s going on with Chuck, Reaper, etc. Instead of wasting energy being worried about things we have little control over, let’s appreciate the programs that survived. I thought it’s time to take stock and see what “genre” shows are in no danger of being cancelled. I’ll start by saying for some reason Navy NCIS is still going. Who watches this show?

Exclusive Interview: 'Supernatural' Star Jim Beaver Discusses New Book
Jim Beaver is a busy man. Not only does he star on the CW's Supernatural and CBS' Harper's Island (both airing Thursday nights), but he's also a new author with the recent release of his third book, Life's That Way: A Memoir.
Supernatural fans can look forward to part two of this interview later this week in which he talks about what's ahead for Uncle Bobby, but first, BuddyTV spoke to Jim Beaver about his extremely touching new book. In it he shares the nightly e-mails he wrote to friends and family as he spent his final days together with his wife Cecily. She was dying of cancer and they made plans for him to raise their autistic daughter Maddie alone. The book is full of stories about Jim's time on Supernatural and Deadwood but at the heart of it, Life's That Way is a story about enjoying what you have before it's too late.
We spoke with Jim earlier today about his process in writing the new book and about what he learned from his journey, first with Cecily and Maddie and then alone but surrounded by supportive fans.
Hi, this is John from BuddyTV and I'm talking with Jim Beaver, star of Supernatural, Harper's Island and author of a new personal memoir Life's That Way. How's it going?
It's going great, John.
I want to start with this book - a personal memoir, a collection of your daily emails during your wife's battle with cancer; and I'm wondering what made now the right time for you to publish this collection.
Well, there wasn't anything really about now - Spring of 2009 - that was particularly right. It's actually something that I started looking towards [publishing] back in 2006, 2007. You know, it takes a while to make one of these things, especially when you keep dropping the project to go off and do TV shows. On the other hand this is the fifth anniversary of those events so it ended up being sort of coincidentally fitting. But this wasn't a recent decision.
When you were going through and collecting all of these emails that you had written, had you gone over them before or was going through them again almost [a discovery of] new things about yourself?
I think you really hit there with the latter. I had, for the most part, not gone back and looked at any of this stuff since I had finished that year of email journaling. Yeah, it was - especially in the early days of trying to get it together, even to present to an agent or a publisher - it was very difficult to go back over it, to be reminded of some of the worst of times. And yet at the same time I was blessed to be reminded of some really wonderful experiences that happened during that period. And then, of course, in the process of turning anything like this into a book you go over it, and over it, and over it, and over it. It was almost an emotional experience. I guess I got used to it a little bit. I've had a book or two prior to this but none of them were personal so I'd never had that experience of it being difficult to go through the material.
What has been the reaction from the people reading it?
So far the reaction I've seen has been extraordinary. I'm very gratified by it, very flattered and very touched. An awful lot of people have told me that they were able to relate to things in the book because of circumstances in their own lives and I found many of their stories very touching; and it really is a thrill to me to feel like even in some small way I've been able to say something that helps someone else out in a particular situation. What transpired with my family was in large part fairly awful. To be able to take something like that and make something small that is good out of it is very rewarding. It takes a lot of the despair out of a loss to feel that you can regenerate something good out of it.
We asked our fans at BuddyTV - all the Supernatural fans - to submit questions for you. Quite a few of them were actually about the book. A lot of people are talking about how much they love the book, and how they're buying it for all of their friends and family and giving it out.
That's very flattering.
One of the fans, Erin, wanted to know, if there was only one lesson what's the most important lesson you would want people to take away after reading this book.
I think that the most important lesson would be to share your life, and I mean that in two ways. Relish the opportunities to share your life with the people you love because you never know when those people will be taken from you. And also, if you've suffered a great loss please don't keep it to yourself. Please don't feel you have to suffer in silence. Sharing my grief with family and friends and even the strangers was, it turns out, one of the great blessings of my life because people rallied around to hold me up, and I've found that that's what good people do, and there's an awful lot of good people out there.

Past is present in 'Caprica,' a 'Battlestar Galactica' prequel
Two men stand and smoke on an urban street corner. One man wears black gloves, which are traditional mourning garb in his culture.
“Times like these, old ways are supposed to help, I guess,” the other man says.
But “Caprica” (Universal Studios Home Entertainment; three and a half stars), a meditative film that came out Tuesday on DVD and kicks off an upcoming “Battlestar Galactica” prequel series, is really about new ways and technologies.
As was the case with “Battlestar,” this 93-minute film—the first installment of a Sci Fi drama that debuts in early 2010—doesn’t make blanket pronouncements about how technology is bad and will be our downfall.
True, “Battlestar” was about the war between the mechanized Cylons and flesh-and-blood humans, but the differences between the two races fell away over time. “Being human” was much more about the ability to empathize and feel than the presence of wires or chips in an individual’s evolutionary past.
“Caprica,” even more than “Battlestar,” is an examination of how greed, selfishness, heedlessness and pain prompt people to use technology to avoid difficult situations.
Technology isn’t really the problem; the trouble comes from our belief that we can always control it and use it to keep life from hurting too much or being too hard. Yet anyone who has ever tried to set up a balky new device or felt oppressed by the constant presence of a BlackBerry knows that things that are supposed to make our lives better don’t always do so.
Even if you’re not interested in “Caprica’s” subtexts about technology, this handsome film works well as a thoughtful character study. The cast, including the men who play the two smokers mentioned above, is an embarrassment of riches. Eric Stoltz gives intelligence and quiet charisma to techno-industrialist Daniel Graystone, and Esai Morales (“Jericho”) is perfectly cast as Joseph Adama, a lawyer and immigrant caught between the technocratic culture on the planet of Caprica and the more traditional culture of his own planet, Tauron.
As was the case with “Battlestar,” there are compelling women at the heart of the story: Paula Malcolmson, a “Deadwood” veteran, has a lively, razor-sharp presence that makes her scenes crackle, and Polly Walker (“Rome”) is also excellent as the steely Sister Clarice, the head of an exclusive private school and a major influence on the show’s younger characters.
The younger set of actors, most of whom play students at Sister Clarice’s school, have yet to prove they can match the gravitas and subtlety of the older cast members, but they hold their own. And I wish there was a deeper explanation of the religious beliefs that motivate some of the characters, but presumably that will come when the show returns next year.
'Battlestar Galactica' Announced for Blu-ray
The wait is over: Universal Studios has officially announced a July Blu-ray release for the complete 'Battlestar Galactica.'
Following months of teasing and web rumors, which strongly hinted at a summer high-def release for the much-beloved cult sci-fi series, Universal earlier this week alerted retailers to a pending announcement. Though dates remained unspecified, pre-order listings soon followed on many top retail sites, including Amazon.com. Confirming the widely expected, Universal has now issued an official press release announcing a July 28 landing for 'Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5' and 'Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series.' Both titles will arrive day-and-date on Blu-ray and DVD.
Both the three-disc 'Season 4.5' and the mammoth twenty-disc(!) 'The Complete Series' will see all episodes presented on BD-50 dual-layer discs, in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video (1.78:1) with DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround tracks.
'Season 4.5' is also confirmed to included extended versions of three, as-yet-unspecified episodes.
Extras on 'Season 4.5' include audio commentaries (episodes not identified) by Ronald D. Moore, David Eick and Edward James Olmos, the five-part documentary "A Look Back," a trio of featurettes ("Evolution of a Cue," "...And They Have a Plan," "The Journey Ends: The Arrival"), deleted scenes and Eick's full video blogs that originally appeared on the internet.
Exclusive to the Blu-ray are three U-Control features: "The Oracle" interactive guide to ships and characters, "Battlestar Actual" glossary of terms, and the "What the Freak Happened to You?" exploration of the history and connections of your favorite characters through video clips and relevant facts. Also on the Blu-ray is the "Battlestar Galactica Ultimate Battle" interactive game, My Scenes, and a bonus featurette "The Musicians Behind Daybreak."
Universal has not revealed the bonus features for 'The Complete Series' set, but extras are expected to include at least those found on 'Season 4.5,' plus much more. We'll keep you posted.
Suggested list price for 'Season 4.5' has been set at $69.98, and $349.98 for 'The Complete Series.'

"Battlestar" and "Caprica" and Stars Aplenty
There's something about the time that immediately follows a show wrapping that's special, and difficult, and noteworthy. Maybe it is because the fans are grappling with the series being over, or that they'll have to turn to graphic novels or the occasional TV movie for more on their favorite characters.
"Battlestar Galactica" is in that moment right now, having bid goodbye just a few weeks ago. But it isn't truly a goodbye -- "Caprica," an earlier story in the "Battlestar" universe, will be back on television next year. And the cast and creators are still eager to talk all things BSG. In fact, executive producer Ron Moore, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, and a bunch of the actors from "Caprica" (including Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales) are gathering together to muse on both science-fiction properties. "Caprica" will also screen.
For BSGers, and people looking forward to the new series -- and we're going to take a wild guess and say those groups might be one and the same -- this is definitely a big, starry, questions-getting-answered kind of night. Battlestar Galactica Final Series DVD
Finally the wait is over! After five gripping years, sci-fi’s most exciting show comes to an end, but it will be yours to own as of 1st June 2009 when Battlestar Galactica: The Final Season is released on DVD. Packed full of extra content, including a sneak peek at the brand new Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica, this grand finale is the sci-fi collector’s dream come true.
We know that the ‘13th Colony’ – Earth – really does exist, but the burning question on everyone’s lips is finally answered – ‘Who is The Last Cylon’?
The world ended with no warning, and all that was left … was hope. The Cylons were created by the people of the Twelve Colonies. Intelligent robots, they were used as slaves and soldiers to fight humanity’s wars. But the Cylons became sentient and they rebelled. Man and machine fought to a bloody stalemate, and then the Cylons withdrew to a remote region of space.
A truce between the Twelve Colonies and the Cylons lasted for 40 tense and silent years. Each year, on the anniversary of the treaty-signing, humanity sent an envoy to the neutral ground of Armistice Station to meet with a Cylon envoy. For 39 years, no Cylon envoy came.
Then, on the 40th anniversary, a stunning blonde — a Cylon in human form — met the human envoy … moments before the Cylons vaporized the station and launched a genocidal attack on the Twelve Colonies.
In one devastating day, billions of human lives were consumed by nuclear fires. Only those souls fortunate enough to be aboard starships were able to band together and escape and flee into deep space, led by the sole surviving Colonial warship, the battlestar Galactica. The Galactica and its crew seemed to be unlikely saviors for humanity’s fewer than 50,000 desperate survivors. The ship was old and had been about to be decommissioned and turned into a museum when the Cylon attack occurred. In the aftermath its commanding officer, William Adama, found himself responsible for safeguarding the last remnants of the human race.
Meanwhile, the annihilation of the Colonial government on Caprica resulted in the succession of Laura Roslin, the Secretary of Education, to the presidency. Driven by prophetic visions and political necessity, she set the fleet upon a quest that will take it into the farthest reaches of unexplored space … in search of the mythical, lost “13th colony” — Earth.

Supernatural: Sam and Dean Meet Their 'Brother' in a New Video
On this week's episode of Supernatural the question isn't whether or not Sam and Dean could have a brother - not if you ask their supposed kin Adam. He wants to know whether it's possible that he himself has brothers, whether John Winchester could have had sons other than him.
Earlier in the week The CW released two new clips from "Jump the Shark", Supernatural's none-too-soon return to the air after another tedious break. At least it's the last break of this season. One of those clips revealed that Sam's research on Adam validates his story, with college records and other official documents on file. In the other, Dean seethed with jealousy when he found out that John took Adam to a Minnesota Twins game, a day that would have meant the world to him.
Today we have another clip from "Jump The Shark," portraying the further developments in the relationship between the ghost fighting duo and their supposedly-long-lost brother, another piece in the puzzle of whether or not this goofy kid could really be who he says he is, and whether or not Supernatural has jumped the shark.
One Winchester, two Winchester, three Winchester ...
No, we haven't found a new way to count off seconds, but are just dropping some hints about Supernatural. So, we all know more or less by now, that Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively) are all alone, family-wise, in their demon-hunting quest ever since Dad (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) split the earthly plane early on in the series.
Not so fast. The upcoming episode to be aired in the United States on April 23 will introduce ... a THIRD Winchester brother. Yep, you read that right. Adam (Jake Abel) will be the product of a hitherto-unknown aspect of their late father's life, EW.com reports.
Not much is known at this moment about what Adam's feelings will be toward the family trade, but the episode - in acknowledgment of the fact that sudden shifts in direction like this frequently spell the start of many a TV show's downward spiral - is entitled Jump the Shark.
No, we're not saying. Google it!

Battlestar Galactica Ships Up For Grabs
Ever dreamt of battling Cylon Raiders in deep space? Well, if you have some spare cash, you can make that dream just a little bit more real.
Now that Battlestar Galactica is finished, there are plenty of props hanging around doing nothing but collecting dust and NBC/Universal have decided to auction them off. The variety of items on offer is simply staggering, ranging from medals and rank insignia, to rocket launchers and flight helmets. You can even buy currency and letters, should such things tickle your fancy.
The main attraction however, are the two full sized fighters. A Raptor or a Mark VII Viper - which, in my humble opinion, is much cooler - could be yours. Both ships have fully functioning interiors, with light-up panels and monitors. Propworx, the company running the auction, says that they think they're going to have a Cylon ship available as well.
But if you're planning on investing is some BSG memorabilia, you'd better have deep pockets. A 500 cubit note will set you back $77 and a flight suit will cost in the region of $2000. The top prizes, the ships, were previously auctioned on eBay and although bids for both ships reached around $21,000, neither met the reserve price.
The auction takes place in Pasadena on May 8-10.

Supernatural’ Fans Name Azazel Best Villain
A junk food lover who plays tricks on the self-important to humble them; a commando with super strength; a beautiful woman who makes men offers they can’t refuse but will regret for all eternity. Sam and Dean Winchester have confronted a lot of vividly drawn, sometimes humorous and often disturbing villains on Supernatural. But which one stands out as their greatest opponent? BuddyTV fans chose Azazel, the Yellow Eyed Demon.
Azazel began building his resume of horrors from the very first episode of the series, first killing Sam and Dean’s mother, Mary, and then Sam’s girlfriend, Jessica. He organized the Special Children to lead a war against humanity. He makes deals with people when they’re at their most desperate, offering to stop domestic abuse or bring their dead parents back to life, and in exchange he takes their souls. His very arrival causes cattle to die and electrical storms to rage. And he’s impervious to holy water and the salt barrier.
Our Supernatural Showdowns poll, which invites users to choose their favorite between two random characters from a series, asked fans to rank Supernatural’s best villains. Azazel, Lilith, Alastair and the Trickster were the top vote-getters, with Azazel holding just a lead of just 676 votes. Good thing those last ten people made their voices heard, huh?
Anitamelling2 cut to the heart of the reason why Azazel stands out, saying, “[You] have to realize that without YED there would be no reason for the boys to hunt in the first place so he deserves the title in my eyes.”
RichGirl06 added, “Azazel - hands down! He was the Winchester’s principle and oldest arch nemesis, with a personal and first hand association with all the six Winchesters (grandparents included) and his damage still has a continuing effect on Sam! So, YED is the baddest/best villain in my book,no doubt about that!”
QueenB21 crowed, “This is a no-brainer. Yellow eyes is definitely the baddest of them all. Not to mention hes a big part of Supernatural history. I mean, without him the boys wouldn’t be who they are! Yellow Eyed Demon is a classic supernatural badass!”
SNis4me still put in his vote for Uriel, explaining, “An angel who kills other angels so he can help Lucifer rise. Can you get any more evil than that?” BradLalonde2 made the case for Alastair, saying, “My absolute favorite character has to be Azazel, hands down. He was creepy, deadly, smart and twisted with your head! To make it even better, he could cut you apart with his mind!”
6Cookie6 put the competition in a broader perspective, saying, “Each villain deserves a go at the number one spot. Each has contributed to the world of misery and pain for our boys not to mention poured evil into the world in general. Even the ‘tamer’ villains are mega baddies. Jake put a knife in Sam’s back while The Trickster had him endure hell on Earth for 100 Tuesday’s and 6 months. Azazel scores tops for starting it all, Lilith for pinning a screaming Sam to the wall as he watched his brother get shredded, Alastair for cruelty to both Dean and John, and Uriel for being a monster traitor. No show does villains better than Supernatural - we love to hate them all.”

Supernatural’s Jim Beaver Meets Fans at Book Signing
You know him at Bobby on Supernatural, but this week actor Jim Beaver traded in his trucker cap and took his place at the podium at the local Barnes & Noble. Jim was in Huntington Beach, California to sign copies of his new book Life’s That Way.
The book is made up of a series of emails Jim wrote during a particularly hard time in his life. Just weeks after finding out that his daughter was autistic, he learned that his wife Cecily, a non-smoker, had lung cancer. With friends and family anxious to keep up with the news, Jim began sending out nightly emails detailing Cecily’s progress along with general day-to-day tidbits. In doing so, he unintentionally created an emotional journal that became a life line for hundreds (or possibly thousands) of strangers who were suffering through a similar ordeal.
The Huntington Beach book signing was the first of several Jim has planned and he seemed surprised to see the twenty-five or so people who were awaiting his arrival. He quickly gleaned that they were all Supernatural fans but that didn’t dampen his mood. Quite the contrary. When the crowd dutifully asked questions about nothing but his book and his writing, he put on his best Bobby growl and snapped that most of us had probably never even read a book! Ask about Supernatural already!
After spending a good twenty minutes reading passages from the book and discussing his wife’s passing, I think Jim was more than ready to switch gears to a more comfortable subject - the world of the Winchesters. He recounted the infamous toe-tugging prank Jared pulled during “Dream a Little Dream of Me” after which he asked if any of us had actually felt Jared’s pecs! Uh, sorry, no. Then he told a story about making Jensen crack up during one of the final episodes. It’s more of a “you had to be there” funny story, but it was fun to hear him talk about life on the set.
I uploaded a video of that portion of his talk, it’s a bit hard to hear but you’ll get the drift.
As for Harper’s Island, Jim said he had to sign more confidentiality agreements with CBS than he signed for secret clearance when he was in the military — so no clues at all about who the killer is on that show.
Here’s the video of Jim and afterward what I think is a big Supernatural spoiler, so BEWARE!!!

Gandolfini to sell 'Sopranos' wardrobe to benefit charity
Tony Soprano is shedding his wardrobe for charity.
From the short-sleeve, button-down blue shirt he wore in the opening credits of the smash HBO
series to the bathrobe he donned to fetch the morning paper, actor James Gandolfini is selling off 24
outfits at Christie's.
Proceeds from the June 25 pop culture auction will go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit
group that assists severely wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Estimates for the costumes start
at $500.
Gandolfini's wardrobe, many with the original production tags attached, is expected to bring up to
$36,500.
A tan cotton bathrobe with lavender trim and 'S' insignia on the breast pocket, featured in the pilot
when he got the paper and fed the ducks in his pool, may bring as much as $1,500.
For a taste of the show's blood and guts, the auction house is offering the blood-splattered costume
worn in the scene when Tony is shot by a demented Uncle Junior.
Consisting of a black and beige short-sleeve polo shirt, white tank top and black pants, the costume
could fetch up to $3,000.
Another 37 costumes worn by other lead "Sopranos" characters, including Paulie Walnuts, Christopher
Moltisanti and A.J. Soprano, also are being sold, though the proceeds from those sales will not benefit
the Jacksonville, Fla.-based veterans' organization.
The costumes for the series were designed by Juliet Polsca, who earned two Emmy nominations and
a Costume Designers Guild Award.
Sopranos movie getting made?
Manager of real-life "Bada Bing" club says he put renovations on hold because Tony and family are
making a feature film.
For a man so tight with the mob (albeit a fictional one), Nick D'Urso doesn't seem to know the rule
about not "singing" about valuable Mafia information. D'Urso is the manager of Satin Dolls, a nudie bar
in New Jersey, and claims that a movie based on HBO's The Sopranos is in the works.
So how does a strip-club manager have inside information on one of Hollywood's secret projects?
Satin Dolls is the location that doubles as The Bada Bing, the fictional notorious hangout for Tony
Soprano and his boys in the critically acclaimed drama.
D'Urso told the online branch of New Jersey's The Record that he was planning on renovating the
establishment when he got a call from someone saying a Sopranos movie was in the works. Not
wanting to mess with Tony's favorite joint (and miss out on cashing in on some extra moolah), D'Urso
decided to postpone any work on the building to keep it in the same shape it was when it starred in
the show.
"I got an inside tip that they're going to do a movie, so I don't want to make any major changes,"
D'Urso said Wednesday. "I'm not going to reveal my sources, but we got a call from somebody
[working] on the script."
HBO had no comment on D'Urso's claims. The Sopranos ended its six-season run last year.

We've Got Some Supernatural Winners
A short while ago we asked fans of the CW’s Supernatural to summarize the ending of the episode, “
The Monster at the End of This Book” to be entered for a chance to win a set of Season Companion
books for the first three seasons (our grand prize) or a chance to win a copy the Season Three
Companion Guide (our runners’ up prize). Well, we didn’t quite realize what we were getting in to.
Shortly after the episode aired our entries started flying in. Most we not content just to talk about
the ending and instead summarized the entire episode.
The general consensus seemed to be that this episode really shone. Anyhow, out of this pool of
excited entrants we had to select our winners: one grand prize winner and two runners up. Drawing
at random, this is how it played out:
Grand Prize Winner: Joseph S.Runners Up Winners: Kylee P. and Karen O.
Congratulations to you all and thank you to everyone who watched and then wrote in to our almost-
too-much-like-homework contest.
Now, if you haven’t seen the show, then you might be interested in hopping over to the CW site and
checking it out. If so, you can do so here: Supernatural Videos.
Or, if you’re a fan of the show and want to check out the books we offered as prizes as well as a few
novels based off the characters on the show, you should head on over to Titan Books. And we’ve

Rocky Carroll, NCIS: Season Finale Is "Quite a Ride!"
Greetings,
This will be a brief entry, so much going on at this time. My mother's doing pretty good, thanks for all your prayers and good wishes. Today is the first day of filming for the season finale. Of course I can't give anything away, but hang on to your hats, folks. It's going to be quite a ride to the end of Season 6.
I have to answer this question first because one of our own is trying to win a bet. Yes, Shory22, you are right. I was a member of the cast of the Fox sitcom Roc from 1990 to 1993. If you ever want to know about actor's credits, there are a few data bases online that will help. I go to IMDb when I want to look up someone's credits; it's pretty thorough.
When my daughter was in preschool we had an informal get-together at the school with all the kid's parents. I mentioned to a few of the parents that I was an actor. The next time I saw those parents, they had questions about my stint on Broadway, what it was like to work with Gene Hackman, was it fun working on The West Wing ... etc. Thank you, IMDb.
To PeachehKate: I guess the term you used (massive cliffhanger) is appropriate for the end of Season 6. Yes, the producers and some of the actors read the blogs and NCIS forums. I enjoy reading some of the stuff on the NCIS forum, but I don't wade too deep in those waters. It's for the fans. It's their forum. They are free to talk about whatever they want — the things they like, the things that may bother them (Vance), or just connect with people and talk about whatever. I like doing this blog because I'm communicating with people who want to communicate with me. I feel like I'm eavesdropping on a private conversation when I'm checking out the fan forum. Vance may find that kind of thing interesting, but not me.
Missbrody: I just wanted to say thank you for your kind response.
Auddie: You asked about the NCIS soundtrack CD. You will be pleased to know that Pauley Perrette was a major force behind that CD. I will let her know that you like it.
Su: My real family gets quite a kick out of seeing my on-screen family. We were watching "Knockout" and my wife said, "Every time you have a son on TV, he wears glasses. What's up with that?" I'm workin

Chris O'Donnell confirmed for NCIS spinoff
Film star finalizes deal to join LL Cool J on new CBS procedural; Grey's Anatomy keeps Callie's new girlfriend.
It's not exactly surprising, but it is official. Chris O'Donnell will lead the newest Naval Criminal Investigative Service after all. The star of Scent of a Woman has finalized his deal to be the lead in CBS' NCIS spinoff, says The Hollywood Reporter.
As previously reported, O'Donnell will play NCIS agent Callen, a legend in the field and leader of the new squad. He'll be joined by LL Cool J, who plays a former Navy SEAL, and Louise Lombard, Peter Cambor, and Daniela Ruah. All the characters will be introduced in an episode of NCIS later this year, with the series expected to take off on its own next fall.
Over at Grey's Anatomy, recurring actress Jessica Capshaw has been bumped up to a more major role with the possibility of becoming a regular next season, reports EW.com. Capshaw plays Arizona Robbins (where do they come up with these names?), the lesbian girlfriend of Callie, and was originally supposed to only be on for a handful of episodes. With the move, ABC proves to its critics that a lesbian storyline wasn't at the heart of the controversial firing of actress Brooke Smith, or maybe that's exactly what they want you to think!
Bill Lawrence (creator of Scrubs) has fleshed out his cast for Cougar Town, with Busy Phillips, Dan Byrd, and Brian Van Holt joining lead Courteney Cox. In the show, Cox plays a 40-something mom who is newly single. Phillips, recently seen in He's Just Not That Into You, will play Cox's friend and co-worker. Byrd, a TV.com favorite as the star of Aliens in America and Sylar's sidekick in Heroes, will play Cox's son. Van Holt (John From Cincinnati) will play Cox's ex-husband and father to Byrd's character.
Finally, Brittany Snow (American Dreams) has been cast as the young Lily van der Woodsen in the forthcoming Gossip Girl spinoff/prequel. The show will have its groundwork laid on the May 11 episode of Gossip Girl, and will be part of the CW's 2009-2010 fall schedule if the network's executives have their heads screwed on straight.

The 10 Best US Television Shows
We used to be good at television didn’t we? Hands up those who remember the Pythons, Potter and Bleasedale. Sadly, those halcyon days are long gone. Instead, this is a golden age for small screen entertainment from across the pond, with magic US geese laying series after series of brilliant television. The quality of entertainment arriving over the Atlantic is so good viewers are taking television seriously again. Every wave of imports slowly washes away the endless slurry of reality nonsense from our screens, and the idiot box takes us into a world of intelligent, complex drama. And we can’t get enough. Digital schedules groan under the weight of new American programming, while shows such as The Wire, Mad Men and The Sopranos have found a dedicated following online and via DVD sales.10. Curb Your EnthusiasmThe on rushing juggernaut that is Larry David’s comical ineptness provides entertainment one part hilarious, one part jaw clenchingly awkward. If you found David Brent difficult to watch in The Office, you’ll probably chew your own face off watching the former Seinfeld man’s fictional portrayal of himself. Look out for guest turns by Ted Danson and Steve Coogan and a superb episode starring Mel Brooks in one of the most over dramatic Broadway productions you’re ever likely to see.9. The ShieldIf you’re not shocked by the sheer immortality and corruption of modern society, tune into The Shield to get up to speed. The Wire has often overshadowed The Shield, a gritty, dark and often disturbing show based on a notorious case of LAPD corruption, but it’s great stuff that deserves to be spoken in the same terms as David Simon’s masterpiece. There are no good guys in The Shield, no code of honour to live by; only brutal, shocking acts of violence conducted in a clapped out Los Angeles unrecognisable from The City of Angels Hollywood would have us believe.8. South ParkThe badly drawn boys of Colorado provide the canvas onto which Trey Parker and Matt Stone continue to spew the fettered musings of their politically incorrect minds. No stone is left unturned in their relentless satirisation of society and the show remains laugh out loud funny with a refreshing edginess even after nearly 200 episodes.7. LostI don’t really know what’s going on, and to be honest neither do you. Nevermind, because J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi, mystery, conundrum thingamajig is pure water cooler entertainment.6. The SimpsonsAfter all these years, new episodes of The Simpsons are still a joy to behold. Unless you’re watching Channel 4, in which case the pop culture references are probably as out dated as Betamax.5. The West WingAt one particular point television stopped becoming a dirty word for American actors. Rather than seeing TV as a career graveyard, leading talents were actively seeking out roles on the small screen. That moment was the critically acclaimed first season of The West Wing. Intelligent, fast paced and challenging, the show rewards you just for keeping up.4. 24Innovative in every sense of the word, 24 gave us ‘real-time’ drama and re-introduced split-screen decades after the technique was considered old hat. It was also one of the first major shows to disprove the widely held theory that US TV viewers had attention spans shorter than an episode of Friends spin-off Joey.
3. The SopranosWhile Britain provided a tidal wave of Cockney gangsters, America was busy producing one of the most critically and commercially successful shows in history. One of the key drivers behind the recent surge in brilliant drama on American networks, there is more quality packed into every second of The Sopranos minute-long title sequence than an eternity of Shane Ritchie Minder re-makes could ever hope to accomplish.
2. Battlestar GalacticaThere are two types of viewer when it comes to Battlestar Galactica, those who think it’s brilliant and those who haven’t seen it yet. From unlikely beginnings, the show has given us four seasons of entertainment both epic and intimate, in the process bringing sci-fi back into the mainstream again. I’ve run out of superlatives for this brilliant show, which is every bit as rich and challenging as the best US dramas, but with explosions. Lots and lots of explosions.
1. The WireThe Baltimore based cop show has received widespread praise from critics who fawn at its very mention. Believe the hype, it’s as good as you think it’s going to be, probably better, and well worth checking out (The Wire is currently showing on BBC2 every night). Be warned, episodes are like Pringles, and perfectly reasonable people have been debilitated into muttering “just one more” as they rock back and forth in their pyjamas after an extended Baltimore-fest.

Supernatural: Keeps Getting Better
Everyone’s favorite horror show/drama is only getting more and more interesting.
Two brothers fighting evil beings, rapier wit, and hot lead characters. This is the potent combination that is Supernatural. And it is just getting better. In the first season, we meet Sam and Dean Winchester, played brilliantly by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, two brothers on a search for their father who raised them to hunt demons, vampires, and all manner of things that go bump in the night.
We find that Sam has special abilities; we find that Dean has a hard time functioning without their father. We learn that killer music selection is part of this show's appeal. And we find that this show is highly addictive, constantly making fans beg for more.
In the third season finale, Dean went to Hell after his contract is up and his year is spent. In the fourth season opener, Dean is alive, digging himself out of his grave and curious as to why he was saved. This season promises to be the best yet, as the boys and the fans prepare themselves for the ultimate showdown: the Apocalypse.

'Supernatural' May Only Last 5 TV Seasons
All those new Supernatural acolytes, however, may find themselves wishing they'd showed up sooner: The cast and crew's ''godfather,'' executive producer and director Kim Manners (The X-Files), passed away in January; Padalecki, 26, and Ackles, 31, are exhausted; and Kripke has long maintained that he wants the series to last only five seasons — that's one more, then they're done. As Kripke told his writers at the beginning of this season, ''Let's be bold. Let's delve into the stories headlong. Let's not tap-dance around them because we're scared, or because we have to save something for tomorrow. Because we don't know if there will be a tomorrow.''
This means that the entire TV series may only have a total of five seasons. The popularity of the show already rivals CSI and Grey's Anatomy, averaging over 3 million viewers weekly. There has been no official announcement of a sixth season. The main actors (Ackles and Padalecki) have also stated that they are ready to move on to other projects and move closer to family and friends after season five.
With the weight of their workload and Manners' death casting a pall on the set, Ackles and Padalecki are also eager to move on, even as they affirm their love for the show. ''We don't live at home. We don't sleep in our own beds. Our families aren't here. Our friends aren't here. Our girlfriends aren't here,'' says Ackles. ''To do it for another five years, or whatever, I don't know if I could handle it.'' Padalecki concurs: ''I enjoy working, but what's the point? Do I want to just keep on doing photo shoots and work so I can get more famous so I can do even more photo shoots and work and fly to more places to do more press?... I get sick of talking about myself.''
Meanwhile, the next episode (April 23) will introduce a third Winchester brother (Abel). He looks younger and could add more drama and assistance in their fight against rogue angels and powerful demons. This is very exciting news for fans.
If there will be an extension to the Supernatural series, I will definitely update you

Third Winchester brother cast in Supernatural

Actor Jake Abel cast as 18-year-old Supernatural sibling; fans think move is actually a bit of trickery.
The New Year was still ringing in when news broke that Supernatural was making a big change to its tried-and-true formula--producers were adding a third Winchester brother. Now comes word of which lucky young actor will be the newest dreamboat demon killer, and the possibility that this may all be a bit of a prank.
Actor Jake Abel will play brother to Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) in the April 23 episode of Supernatural, reports TVGuide.com. Abel character will be Adam Milligan, the result of some extracurricular sexual activities by dad John Winchester on one of his adventures. Abel's previous credits are pretty limited, with his biggest role being in the short-lived Threshold.
Most fans, upon hearing the news, were outraged as Dean and Sam are the cornerstones of the show and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke has repeatedly said the show's heart comes from the relationship between the two brothers. However, knowing how tricky the Supernatural writers can be, this whole thing may be more of a stunt--just look at the episode's title: "Jump the Shark."
The phrase, which itself has been overused to the point that it is a perfect example of its own definition, is doled out to moments when a television program (or other recurring property) has run out of fuel creatively and begins to deteriorate in quality. This is often accompanied by some gimmick, such as adding a new brother to a show that's been on for three-and-a-half seasons.
Pointing more towards this possibility is the fact that Abel is signed on only for that one episode--meaning this is Kripke and company pulling our legs or that he's getting killed off awfully quickly.

Supernatural: What About Sam?
Supernatural is character driven drama. And that character, so far, is Dean.
Yes, Sam is supposed to be the special one. Yeah, Sam is the one who resisted taking up the "family business." But this has become Dean's story behind the scenes.
Season 1
It started slow, in Season 1, with 2 brothers with different wants. Dean's outright motivation in tracking Sam down at college was to find John. But along the way, we find out Dean is kind of missing having a family. We find out about Sam's desire to be normal, and he just wants to get the job over with and return to school.
Then Jess dies. Now Sam is fully invested in getting revenge, and finding John. At the end of the season, the brothers find out that they can have their revenge, but it will require sacrificing their dad.
And they aren't willing to do it. And they pay the price with Dean's life, until John sacrifices himself to save Dean.
Season 2
Now it's all about Dean. Dean doesn't know to live with his guilt over John's death, and he also has to live with knowing he may have to kill Sam. By the end of the season, Dean has learned several things - that he really wants a normal life, but knows he can't have it; that his brother is the most important thing in his life; and that he's willing to die to protect Sam.
And Sam.... well, Sam finds out he's basically a monster, but mostly just seems along for the ride. Shotgun, of course.
Season 3
This really should be Sam's season. Dean learns that he really does want to live, and that the family has to stop sacrificing themselves for each other. But Sam gets short-changed. He learns the importance of family, and that he's stronger than he knows - able to defeat Lilith with his psychic power. But his character is scarcely revealed.
Season 4
So here we are. Dean is once again learning things about his character, like he's capable of great evil. But Sam... well, Sam finally may be about to reveal some character.
We're finding out that Sam is afraid of the demon side of himself. He doesn't want to become a monster, but isn't sure he'll be able to overcome the darkness inside.
So maybe, maybe, Sam (and the audience) will finally learn something intimate about his character.
Big message time
I think Sam, and Dean, have to learn that The Greatest Evil is Within Ourselves.
I put that in caps because it's an old theme - maybe most famously explored by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But the show will have a fresh take on it - 2 brothers who consider themselves monsters, hunting monsters. How do they hunt what's inside them?
So maybe Sam has to learn this year that he's not unique in being capable of evil. We all are capable of evil, but we have to actively fight it. And he'll learn to live with himself.
Dean is the one who's going to teach it to him.
Dean, the teacher
Dean has to learn to live with the knowledge of what he's capable of. He'll either learn to live with it - or die trying to rid himself of the guilt. Either way, he's an example to Sam. Sam is starting to learn already that the struggle against evil never relents. He learned that in the Metamorphosis episode. But he hasn't learned that his capacity for evil isn't unique. We all fight evil, every day, it's just sometimes we don't recognize it as evil. See the Gordon storyline.
All this is tied up in YED's grand plan.
Did YED want more than the Earth?
Maybe YED's grand plan is take over the Earth, and Heaven.
Now that we've been introduced to the concept of an angel's Grace, we know it can be freely given up. And what can be given up can be taken. And if angels are Heaven's warriors, what defends heaven from Lucifer if all the angels are gone?
YED's grand plan could be to recruit angels to his side, by making them lose, or taking, their Grace (thus turning them human), or making them into demons by bringing out their capacity for evil. After all, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Can the angels do evil, by doing what they think is good? Why not? Humans do it. And the angels are a different kind of evil, a passive evil. They're evil through indifference.
Sam and Dean's role
That may be why God wanted Dean pulled from Hell. Dean is special in a couple of ways now - he's uniquely capable of controlling Sam, and helping Sam learn to deal with his guilt and fear. He also has sympathy, or at least empathy, now for those who give in to their capacity for evil.
Maybe that's the key to defeating YED's plan. I'm still thinking about how that could work.
Death is coming for a pair of Smallville characters

Chloe? Tess? Jimmy? Two of these characters may die--and stay dead--before the season ends, says online report.
The population of Smallville is about to be two fewer. That's the report from EW.com, which is citing a source close to the production of the show who says two characters from the CW science-fiction drama will be killed off later this season. Yikes! So who are the two unlucky stiffs?
Even if we knew, we wouldn't post them here. But for those who want to do a little detective work on their own the two are reportedly "pivotal characters," and not only will they die, but they'll buck that stupid trend of television resurrection and actually stay dead (I'm looking at you Brothers & Sisters! Lamest. "Death." Ever.). Both deaths are being written into the May season finale.
The only other clue we have is that one of the characters set to go kaput is a veteran of the show and one is a relatively new character.
Smallville has been renewed for a ninth season, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it isn't Clark who's going belly-up. So who does that leave? Fan-favorite Chloe? Lil' Jimmy? New villain Tess? Take your guesses in the comments section! Cake for those who get it right.

Smallville's Lex, Heroes' Micah find roles

Michael Rosenbaum ditches drama for comedy, Noah Gray-Cabey sings and dances for ABC.
Rosenbaum will play a married man with an adopted son in an upcoming NBC comedy from producer Justin Adler (Samantha Who?), says The Hollywood Reporter. The domestic life is a far cry from his previous role as young Lex Luthor in Smallville.
Also joining the Adler project is Nick D'Agosto, who was last seen on Heroes as Claire's boyfriend West.
Young actor Gray-Cabey is lined up for ABC's Limelight, about a New York performing-arts school. He'll play one of the students and get a chance to show off some singing and dancing skills.
Elsewhere, veteran actor Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) has been added to the cast of ABC's drama Happy Town. Neill was previously seen as the scheming Cardinal Wolsey in The Tudors and also in NBC's Crusoe.

Heroes: Greg Grunberg Hints on Season Finale

Last night, viewers got a glimpse of Angela’s past as she revealed the dark secrets that have haunted her for years. And as Heroes enters its final two episodes, more mysteries will come to light while the lines are being drawn for a multi-hero crossing of paths at the mysterious Coyote Sands. But that’s not all we can expect as the season comes to a close. Cast member Greg Grunberg reveals that after his character Matt Parkman reunited with the son he never knew he had, Matt will have a whole new set of priorities in the remaining episodes and beyond.
"The baby and his family is the reason Parkman is going to do something in the last episode that he may regret for the rest of his life," Grunberg told TV Guide. "It's a huge story that we play out — something that only a guy who's been pushed and is desperate to save his family would ever do."
While Matt dealing with his child is already a huge deal, he still has to deal with his cheating ex-wife, Janice, who recently surfaced after disappearing early in season 2.
"We've got a lot of stuff to do," Grunberg said of how Janice will figure in the plot. "It's definitely a strained relationship. It's going to take some time and some real emotional scenes for them to get back together. But I think that's what people are going to want to see. I think when Janice finds out that Matt's been thinking about her and just wanting this relationship so bad, that it's going to work." But a happy ending won’t be that easy for Matt and Janice. Aside from the fact that their past issues won’t be resolved over night, Grunberg reveals that Janice has even more secrets than viewers may have guessed, especially when it comes to the "touch and go" powers of the couple's baby.
"It's going to take some work," Grunberg said. "How much can you trust a person who was dishonest with you? She's got secrets of her own — Janice is not as simple a character as everybody thinks. Where did those diamonds go [in Season 1]? There's a lot of things we don't know. We made a baby with powers together, and I don't think that's a one-sided thing."

'Lost's Ratings Steadily Fall, Even as the Series Remains the Top Show on the Net
The times they are a changing. As industry watchers are well aware the television networks have been deeply concerned for some time about the encroachment of newer media onto their turf. Every new cable or premium channel, video game console or website that draws attention and excitement potentially does so at their expense. Part of the solution they’ve gravitated towards is going digital themselves, making series available online through a variety of channels, some free and some pay. But two news bulletins released today about Lost illustrate the reasons it’s growing more complicated to assess or describe how well a series is doing.
The good news, according to World Screen, is that ABC’s online expansion has so far been a success. Last month nine out of the ten most commonly downloaded television series online were furnished by ABC.com. Dancing with the Stars was March’s top earner, garnering twice the numbers of any other series with three million unique viewers. But Lost finished second in the country with 1.4 million. That may not sound like a lot when compared with Nielson rating figures in the tens of millions, but it’s more than you think.

'The L Word' Series Finale Infuriates Fans

Last night, television's only lesbian drama ended after 70 episodes and six seasons. The two-hour block given to The L Word was split up into a one-hour tribute episode and a one-hour series finale. The first hour hailed the series as groundbreaking and as a show worthy of the history books. The drama starring Jennifer Beals, Laurel Holloman, Katherine Moennig, Mia Kirshner, Leisha Hailey and Pam Grier was the first television show to explore the lives and loves of lesbians in West Hollywood as well as the first series with a deaf-lesbian character and a regularly occurring transsexual character. The L Word fans across the nation tuned-in in the hopes of seeing a wedding, a funeral, a baby, or at least a murder case solved. Major Spoilers Below:
And what did we see in the series finale? Nothing. Essentially, the episode was set up like any other episode. Dylan and Helena broke up again over trust issues. Alice and Shane chat on the phone and spend a day drinking their sorrows away together. Bette and Tina host a party. These all sound like normal L Word happenings. The problem is that there was a season-l.ong mystery about who killed Jenny Schecter. Evidently, creator Ilene Chaiken never had any intentions of revealing how Jenny died. Earlier this year, when asked about the solving the mystery, she said, "I don't actually feel compelled to answer it. The show is about character and relationships, and I used this story to deeply explore those relationships. It's a risk not to solve a mystery, admittedly."
A risk? Yes, Chaiken risked having the wrath of The L Word fans come crashing down all around her and it certainly is. Carolinagrrrl from AfterEllen.com said, “The finale was horrible and a slap in the face to the fans. Nothing of substance actually happened, and what ACTUALLY happened was left unresolved/didn't make sense.” As a long time fan of the show myself, I'm still infuriated at the nerve.
'Dexter' Star Bags Guest Spot on 'NCIS'
Jaime Murray, who had a rather interesting role as the titular character’s insane and always topless ex-fling Lila on Dexter, will grace the set of another intense series as he drops by NCIS on its penultimate episode this season set to air sometime this May.
Murray, 31, will play Immigration Customs Enforcement agent Julia “Jules” Foster-Yates, who will reportedly cause a stir among the NCIS team members, particularly Tony (Michael Weatherly). The episode will follow the NCIS team as they engage in a cross-departmental exercise.
Other than the season 2 recurring spot on the Showtime series, the English-born actress played the lead in the short-lived CW series Valentine. Murray is also known for her role as Stacie Monroe in the British comedy-drama series Hustle, where she appeared on the show’s first four seasons. She was also in an episode of The Mentalist.
NCIS is currently on a three-week hiatus, and it is set to return on April 28 with the first of the two-part special episode that introduces the NCIS spin-off entitled NCIS: Legends, where Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and McGee (Sean Murray) are flying to Los Angeles to work with the NCIS special-operations team to solve the murder of one of their agents.
The backdoor story on the NCIS: Legends episode will launch the spin-off, where the murder investigation quickly becomes a matter of national security, alongside Tony starting to snoop into Ziva’s (Cote De Pablo) personal life, in what could very well be a development in the two’s relationship.
Meanwhile, LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell will guest-star in the NCIS episode, then move to become the stars of the spin-off. LL will play tough but charming former US Navy Seal and Middle East expert Sam Hanna, while O’Donnell will play undercover specialist G. Callen.
TV Tonight: Post-strike 'Rescue Me' still going strong
Tonight's must-see: "Rescue Me," 10 p.m., FX.
In its second episode of the season, we're reminded just how good "Rescue Me" can be.
Last week's opener -- ending a 19-month gap, extended by the writers' strike -- was very good; this one is brilliant. It demonstrates a dazzling ability to leap between tragedy and comedy.
Denis Leary, the star and co-creator, has long monologs at both extremes. One has Tommy Gavin's constrained view on Sept. 11 memories; the other is a free-flowing look at the faults of ... well, everyone.
The Sept. 11 reflections also have moving moments from Lt. Shea (John Scurti), but then the humor returns.
Catch the self-centered Sheila (Callie Thorne) as she tries to be a Big Sister. Or Tommy at the hearing that could dump him on "Section 8" mental grounds. Or Tommy confronting his ex-wife's new lover.
That last character is played by Michael J. Fox. Two wonderful actors frolic wonderfully, as guys consumed by pride, foolishness and testosterone.
Tonight's must-see II: "Nova: Doctors' Diaries" conclusion, 8 p.m., Channel 23 (PBS).
This ambitious documentary has traced seven people for 21 years, from their days at the Harvard Medical School.
Early on, one decided to be an anesthesiologist, so he could have regular hours and a family life. There may have been logic there; he's apparently the only one of the seven who has had a long marriage. Several of the doctors have had divorces (one is on his fourth marriage) and setbacks. Still, there is a stirring sense of service here. Blessed with smarts and education, most of these people have spent all or some of their careers helping the poor.
Other choices
? "American Idol," 8 p.m., Channel 47 (Fox). Last week, Scott MacIntyre - once considered a front-runner - was eliminated. Now the final seven contestants perform songs from movies. Quentin Tarantino - who is a writer-director ("Pulp Fiction") and an "American Idol" fan - is the mentor.
? "NCIS" and "The Mentalist," 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., Channel 6 (CBS). Both shows have reruns tonight. "NCIS" has a confrontation with Gibbs' old FBI colleague (Joe Spano); "Mentalist" involves the death of a football player who has angered a self-proclaimed witch.
? "Deadliest Catch" season-opener, 9 p.m., Discovery Channel. "Alaska Week" brings back this reality show, finding the captains in crisis. Some must make up for expensive ship renovations; two are awaiting medical news that could sideline them for this entire, intense fishing season.
? "Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment" debut, 10:01 p.m., Discovery Channel. Nine strangers are plunked into a white wilderness; each has little except a compass, a change of clothes, a sleeping bag and the first piece of a rudimentary map. If they fail to find food, they starve; the only alternative is a panic button that lets them quit. The result is a reality show that is sobering and surprisingly well-done; working in demanding conditions, cameramen have captured a strong portrait of people in crisis.
? "Cupid," 10:02 p.m., Channel 53 (ABC). Here's a challenge for the guy who says he's Cupid: A teen wants his free-spirited mother to link with the macho guy who is (via sperm donation) his biological father; the two, however, face a political impasse. Meanwhile, Sarah (Cupid's therapist) has a new roommate - her mother (Julie Haggerty), who has a lot in common with Cupid.

'Supernatural': Sexy. Scary. Over?
In the intense universe of fandom surrounding Supernatural — the CW series that follows the chisel-jawed Winchester brothers as they drive around the country snuffing out demons — there are ''Sam girls'' and ''Dean girls.'' Websites chronicle every scrap of minutiae (including the fellas' sweet ride, a '67 Chevy Impala), and bloggers dig around casting directors' sites looking for snippets of scenes to post online (they've even managed to spoil entire scripts). There's also a unique and very creepy subset of romantic fan fiction dedicated to siblings Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) called ''Wincest'' — the less said about it the better. One creative fan actually showed up on set in an orange vest, pretending to be a production assistant. ''They gave her a walkie-talkie!'' recalls Ackles. ''She worked the entire day there until somebody finally figured it out. Obviously now they've stepped up the protocol.'' Meaning, the stars have a bodyguard when they're working. Says Padalecki, ''I guess the network or the studio said, 'We [only] have two guys on this show. We'd better protect them.'''
It might be time to beef up the security detail even more, because the Supernatural cult is swelling. Sure, the show may not crack the top 10, or even the top 80 — ''You go to a dinner party and someone asks you what show you work on and you say 'Supernatural,' and they've never heard of it,'' says creator/exec producer Eric Kripke. ''Then they say, 'What network is it on?' and you say 'The CW,' and they've never heard of it'' — but lately it's been making almost otherworldly gains in viewership. Season 4, which has centered on the brothers battling angels as well as their usual demon enemies, is up an impressive 13 percent over last year, with new episodes averaging 3.3 million viewers a week — and that's against Thursday-night stalwarts Grey's Anatomy and CSI.

Gandolfini doesn't want deposition taped
NEW YORK, April 9 (UPI) -- Papers filed in New York's Brooklyn Supreme Court show actor James Gandolfini has requested his deposition for a lawsuit not be videotaped.
A Brooklyn man is suing the former star of TV's "The Sopranos" for allegedly slapping, punching and cursing at him when he approached the actor at JFK Airport on Jan. 29, 2008.
"I spoke to him in a kind of Tony Soprano accent, like, 'Yo, Tony.' All of a sudden, he turned around and choked me... and punched me," Jason Ertischek told the New York Post the day of the alleged incident.
The motion filed by Gandolfini's lawyers said videotaping his deposition "is intended solely to harass, annoy and prejudice defendant and violate his due-process rights," the Post said.
Galdolfini is now starring in the Broadway play "God of Carnage."

Supernatural: Repeat of Afterschool Special
No new eps for a couple more weeks, but you can get your fix by watching Sam take down a bully tonight. Again. As in it's a repeat, not as in he takes down the bully's ghost, though he does that too. Nevermind.
Anyway, I thought this one was entertaining, though personally I wish they would show some episodes from previous seasons. Specifically, I think this would be a great time to show the Pilot episode, plus the final 2 episodes of Season 1, Salvation and Devil's Trap.
Feel free to use the comments to talk about tonight's repeat, your favorite episodes they never replay, where you think things are going, or whatever else Supernatural-related that's on your mind.
In other news
Our favorite junkyard owner, Bobby Singer (not Fred Sanford!) shows up on another network and show tonight. Or rather, the actor who plays him, Jim Beaver, has a new show. Harper's Island - a 13 episode murder mystery mini-series (try saying that 3 times fast) - premieres tonight, thankfully after Supernatural's timeslot. The series has been redone and delayed for quite a while, but it's a go now. You can see it at 10 pm on CBS.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the series also stars our favorite Ruby (or mine, at least), Katie Cassidy.
Why Do People Love Supernatural?
There seems to be a pretty strong fanbase for the CW series Supernatural. I’ve never seen an episode of the show and a good part of that is probably because it’s on The CW. That said, I’m not above considering a series based on the hype but I’d need a reason to watch it. So I’m curious, Supernatural fans: What’s the big deal with this show?
I don’t know anyone who watches Supernatural but I do know there are plenty of people out there online who love it, which is why I’m opening up the discussion here. I’m not asking to be spoiled. I don’t want specific details about the show. What I want to know is; What is it about this series that people just love? I know it follows two brothers who investigate supernatural-related mysteries. And something about a missing father. I can’t say I’m a person who loves supernatural-type series, but I did love Buffy and Angel because both of those shows had other things to offer, including compelling character arcs, frequent comedic moments and all around great writing. To those of you who’ve seen the mentioned Joss Whedon series, does Supernatural measure up in those areas? Is it even comparable? Or is this the kind of show that really just caters to people who like vampires, werewolves and the like?
I’m putting it to you, die-hard Supernatural fans. I’m strongly considering Netflixing the first season to check this show out. If you think it’s worth the time, for me (and anyone else reading this), post a comment below and let me know why you think Supernatural is great (or why it isn’t). What does this series have to offer people who like good TV?
Supernatural: The Show Might Go On, But Eric Kripke Won't
Fans of Supernatural have known for quite a while that executive producer Eric Kripke envisioned their favorite series to have a five season story arc. Rather than allowing Supernatural to become a shell of its former self, Kripke is determined to make the episodes that remain very strong and leave audiences wanting more. Recently rumors have begun circulating suggesting that the series might continue; but Kripke was recently crystal clear with Entertainment Weekly that even if the series went on he would not.
''Despite what the network and studio may or may not want, I don't have more than five seasons of story," he said. "I certainly would be willing to make sure there are enough villains and heroes around to continue a new story line, and I would be around to answer a few questions — that's it. I'm outta here. There's no way I'm doing season 6."
To further halt speculation, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki both spoke negatively about the possibility of moving forward. EW asked Ackles whether a big money contract could lure him to stay.
''They'd have to back up a Brinks truck," he said. That may sound very cynical but he has his reasons. "We don't live at home. We don't sleep in our own beds. Our families aren't here. Our friends aren't here. Our girlfriends aren't here."
Jared Padalecki couldn't offer fans much more hope.
''I enjoy working, but what's the point? Do I want to just keep on doing photo shoots and work so I can get more famous so I can do even more photo shoots and work and fly to more places to do more press?... I get sick of talking about myself.''
Game over, right? Supernatural is flatlining? Not necessarily. It's not Kripke's decision to cut life support, or Ackles', or Padalecki's. It's the network's; and just as Supernatural's key figures seem to be trying hard to provide fans closure its the network who is leaving ambiguity.
"If the show's doing well, we would go on, I'm sure,'' said CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff. When asked whether she would try to convince Kripke to come back for it she said, ''It's premature for us to even address that.''
If Supernatural continued but Kripke, Ackles and Padalecki left what would the series be about? Even if Sam left but Dean stayed or vice versa the central character dynamic would be lost. If that happened would Supernatural really be Supernatural at all?
Perhaps that's where the final right of refusal on the series continuation comes into play, the authority even Ostroff alluded to as controlling their decision. Ultimately Supernatural's audience would have to decide whether or not a series without the people who embody it is truly the series they love. As bittersweet as it may be to see the series end, would Supernatural's continuation in a drastically new, network driven direction be a fate worse than death?
